By Doug Green One of the problems I have with taking summer vacations is getting my houseplants watered. Sometimes when I come home from a week on the boat, surrounded by water, I find my houseplants wilted from the lack of it. This trick, and its variation, works wonders for both my plants and my conscience. I put a few old towels down in the bathtub, put the plants on the towels and then run an inch of tepid water into the bottom of the tub. The towels stop the pots from marking up the tub and soak up quite a bit of water. With the fuzz from the towel reaching up to touch the soil through the holes in the pot, the soil tends to stay damp for a long time as well. I dont put any more than an inch of water in the tub as I dont want to drown my sweethearts, just keep them dampish for a week or so. A variation on this is to put an old dishrack upside-down on the bottom of the tub, and fill the water to just over the rack. Take a cloth shoelace and shove one end up the bottom hole of the flower pot as far as you can get it. Set the pot on the old dishrack and trail the shoelace over the edge of the rack down into the water. The shoelace will act as a wick, drawing moisture up into the soil ball and keeping your plants happy. This doesnt work as well as the first trick. One thing I do when I get home after an extended trip is give my plants a bit of a shower. This is particularly useful with larger plants such as banana trees and citrus plants. They both seem to love the warm water shower and although it is messy drying the pots off before moving them back to their windowsills, it is a considerate thing to do for your house plant pets. This type of acne usually takes weeks or even months to disappear. 5. Nodules This type is considered severe. Though it is similar to the less serious papule, a nodule usually has a deeper root and causes inflammation of the affected area. 6. Cysts This type of body acne is considered the most serious of all types. Besides having a deeper root and causing inflammation, cysts can also result in skin scarring. Body Acne Treatment There is actually no absolute best acne solution that is applicable to everyone. The best acne solution for one person may not be effective for another; thus, one can only seek the body acne treatment that works specifically for his or her situation. Less is more Below different ways to create a new look with finishing and decorating touches. Self-trim edgings Looped edging: Make lengthwise strips about 1 inches wide. Fold lengthwise and stitch about inch from edge. Turn inside out, press. Cut pieces exactly the same size, put ends together to form loop and baste to garment / sewing project with even spacing, using same method as for pointed edging. Pointed edging: Cut lengthwise strips 1 inches wide. Cut into squares and fold diagonally once and then again. Baste onto right side of garment, edges together, overlapping points. Baste bias facing on top, stitch all together, trim seam, turn bias to wrong side, slip stitch to position. Ruffles Ruffles are gathered strips of varying widths used as trimming. Fullness is most often 1 times space into which ruffle is to be sewn. Cut out strips and seam short ends together to get piece of desired size. Finish lower edge of ruffle with narrow hand roll hem, lace, binding etc. With a little practice, marvelous results can be achieved with a machine ruffle, which ruffles and stitches the ruffle to the garment at the same time. Double ruffle Both ends are finished and the ruffle is gathered through the center sometimes with ribbon stitched on over gathering. Circular ruffle cut out ruffle in shape of s semi-circle. Hem longer edge or finish in desired way. Baste ruffle to garment, right sides together, with ruffle held straight. Clip edge of ruffle to prevent pulling. (A circular flounce is similar but usually has less fullness.) Sew with a plain seam or top stitch on the right side. Lace Trimmings To gather lace, pull thread at the straight edge to desired fullness, or whipstitch over edge, pulling up thread every few stitches to gather. Usually twice as much lace as the space to which it is to be applied is used. To make a lace insertion, baste lace onto right side. Use a satin stitch or fine running stitch at joining. Cut away fabric underneath, and hand roll raw edges, catching in lace. Or, appliqu with zigzag stitching, the machine zigzagger, hemming. Overhanding, or blanket stitching. To put a lace insertion in lace fabric, overcast or zigzag stitch. To turn corners, make a miter with tiny, close, overcastting stitches so that the effect is like a fine cord. Cut away excess. The best way to test for the burr is by very lightly dragging your finger away from the cutting edge. Should you be able to feel a slight roughness to the edge of the chisel then you know the blade is ready for the next step in the sharpening process. You get a slip stone in order to hone away some of the burr before you finally polish it on a strop. In order to remove the final remaining bits of the burr edge as well as polish the chisel blade you need a leather strop. What you do is draw the blade across the strop away from the cutting edge first one side then the other until the whole of the burr has been removed. You will know that your woodworking chisel sharpening has been completed by just resting the cutting edge of the blade very lightly on your fingernail.
